DR. DICKSON AKOH APPOINTED HEAD OF THE AU-ECOSOCC PEACE AND SECURITY CLUSTER

In a significant move to strengthen continental security frameworks within Nigeria, the National Commandant, Peace Corps of Nigeria, Dr. Dickson Akoh, has been appointed as the Head of the Peace and Security Sectoral Cluster Committee for the African Union Economic, Social, and Cultural Council (AU-ECOSOCC). This prestigious appointment, made in accordance with Article 11 of the AU-ECOSOCC Statutes, positions Dr. Akoh at the forefront of the African Union’s operational mechanism for civil society engagement. The committee serves as a vital bridge, forging strategic partnerships between all tiers of government and civil society to ensure the seamless implementation of AU policies and programs across member states.
As the head of this critical cluster, Dr. Akoh is charged with the mandate to popularize and domesticate the African Union’s vision for a safer and more stable continent. His leadership will focus on a broad spectrum of security imperatives, ranging from conflict anticipation and prevention to post-conflict reconstruction and peacebuilding. The committee’s work is essential in addressing contemporary threats to regional stability, including the prevention of terrorism, the eradication of the use of child soldiers, and the combatting of drug trafficking and the illicit proliferation of small arms and light weapons (SALW).
The appointment underscores a comprehensive approach to security sector reforms, aiming to harmonize local peace initiatives with international standards. Dr. Akoh will oversee the formulation of opinions and programs that directly influence the African Union’s peace and security agenda. By leveraging his extensive experience in youth development and conflict resolution, the new Cluster Head is expected to drive initiatives that not only resolve active disputes but also address the root causes of instability through proactive community engagement and policy advocacy.

To ensure administrative excellence and adherence to continental standards, the AU-ECOSOCC Nigeria Secretariat will serve as the Central Coordinating Office for all committee engagements. This institutional alignment provides a structured framework for the implementation of the AU’s vision, offering operational guidelines that ensure all official matters are handled with diplomatic precision. This centralized coordination is designed to maximize the impact of the committee’s interventions and maintain a direct link with the broader African Union leadership.

The formal inauguration of the National Standing Committees, which took place at the Federal Secretariat in Abuja, marked the commencement of this strategic two-year tenure. This period represents a vital window for the Peace Corps of Nigeria and the AU-ECOSOCC to demonstrate the power of civil society as a catalyst for peace. Through this role, Dr. Akoh continues to solidify his legacy as a champion for national and continental stability, ensuring that the aspirations of the “Africa We Want” become a reality through disciplined action and collaborative governance.
